Bettis Stuff

Dealers

Matt Bettis has been hand shaping surfboards continuously since the late 1970's.

After many boards shaped in his father's garage (Matt's dad was well known ding repairman and shaper, Kenny Bettis), Matt got his first real job in 1982 as a production shaper under the watchful eye of Mark McConnell at M&M surfboards in Fullerton, CA. He started shaping for Windansea Surfboards in 1987 and moved on to Robert August Surfboards around 1990, where he remained for 15 years, working out of the old Spanners glass shop in Huntington Beach. Over that period of time Matt estimates he has hand shaped something like 8,000 to 10,000 boards! Currently Matt is working out of Line Up Glassing in Huntington Beach CA. Matt still shapes for Windansea, but is also shaping under his own label "Bettis Surfboards", in addition Matt has introduced a new line of short boards under his "Resin Head Surfboards" label, which are available from Inflight Surf and Sail in Seal Beach CA.

Matt is best known for both his superb craftsmanship and his ability to turn a client's dream into that "magic" board. The philosophy at Bettis Surfboards differs from that of most shapers. It is driven by Matt's desire to really understand both his client's needs and wishes. Matt completely believes that a new surfboard needs to be a collaborative effort between client and shaper. So there is always an open invitation to clients and prospective clients to "Come In and Smell the Resin".

When the surf is up you can often find Matt and his family surfing at Bolsa Chica. Matt also often spends time surfing in Mexico and Central America.
